Andrew Johnson (Raleigh, December 29, 1808 – Elizabethton, July 31, 1875) was an American politician. He was the 17th President of the United States from 1865 to 1869. Johnson assumed the presidency following the assassination of then-President Abraham Lincoln, of whom he was vice president. Formerly governor of Tennessee, and senator by the same state.
Johnson was an American senator from Greeneville, Tennessee, while secession of southern states occurred. He was the only Southern senator who did not relinquish his position after the war and became the most prominent “war Democrat” of the South, supporting the military policies of US President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War of 1861-1865. In 1862 Lincoln appointed Johnson governor of Tennessee, where he proved to be energetic and effective in fighting the rebellion.
Johnson was appointed to be vice president in 1864 by the National Union Party. He and Lincoln were elected in November 1864 and Johnson became president after the assassination of Lincoln, succeeding him on April 15, 1865.
As president, he assumed responsibility for the Presidential Reconstruction – the first phase of Reconstruction – that lasted until the “Radical Republicans” gained control of Congress in the 1866 elections. His conciliatory policy toward the South, his haste to reinstate the ex-confederates back to the Union and their civil rights vetoes plunged him into a bitter dispute with the “Radical Republicans.” The Radicals in the House of Representatives made an attempt at impeachment in 1868, while maintaining the idea that he had violated the Tenure of Office Act, a law enacted by Congress in March 1867 during Johnson’s veto, but he was acquitted by a single vote in the Senate. Andrew was the first president of the United States to undergo an impeachment .
