Robert Kahn (born October 24, 1915, Los Angeles, November 3, 1998) was a screenwriter, designer and comic artist, famous for being the creator of Batman.

A skilled artist, Kane came to the world of comic books in 1936, publishing his own magazine that would undergo several reformulations. It was when the character “Superman” was created, leveraging comic book sales, that Kane and writer Bill Finger decided to develop another masked crime fighter – the “Bat-Man” (as it was originally written). Bob Kane, however, was the one who presented the idea to the editors, and was the only one to get the credits for the character.

Batman quickly gained success after his first appearance in the 27th issue of Detective Comics, securing Kane’s employment at National Publications (now DC Comics) for several years.

Kane, who had already created a helper for the character Peter Pupp, proposed the addition of a boy named Mercury, who would wear a “super-suit”. Jerry Robinson suggested a normal human being along with the name “Robin” because of the Robin Hood books he had read during childhood, and noted in a 2005 interview that he had been inspired by illustrations from a book by NC Wyeth. The new character, orphaned circus artist Dick Grayson, came to live with Bruce Wayne as his protégé in Detective Comics # 38 (April 1940) and would inspire many similar sidekicks throughout the Golden Age of comics

According to historian Les Daniels, “almost everyone seems to agree that Two-Face was an exclusive creation of Kane.” Catwoman, originally introduced by Kane without the costume as “the Cat”, was partially inspired by her cousin, Ruth Steel. Kane, a frequent movie goer, mentioned that actress Jean Harlow was a model for the project and added that “I always felt women were feline.” Kane created the Scarecrow and drew his first appearance, which was scripted by Finger. Kane also created the original Cara-de-Barro incarnation. According to Kane, he designed the Penguin after being inspired by the mascot of the then-advertising Kool cigarettes – a penguin with a top hat and wand. Finger, however, claimed that he created the villain as a caricature of the aristocratic type because “English gentlemen” reminded him of emperor penguins. Although he did not create the Joker, Bob Kane perfected the villain’s personality and look.

Most of his contributions to “Batman” were in the 1940s, in the so-called Golden Age of the comic book, with several other authors helping him (such as Jerry Robinson, who created the Joker). However, due to editorial policy, Bob Kane was credited with all of Batman’s stories, even if he had not contributed at all. This practice continued until the 60’s, until his name stopped being displayed in magazines. Still only in the 70’s that other creators began to take credit for the stories of Batman.

In the 1960s, Bob Kane created the cartoon character Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse, or The Courageous Cat and the Minute Mouse , a series with 130 episodes originally produced in period of 1960-1962.

After retiring, Kane went on to present his work in art galleries.
