Edward Kennedy “Duke” Ellington (Washington, April 29, 1899 – New York, May 24, 1974) was a jazz composer, pianist and American orchestra leader eternalized with the nickname of “The Duke” and distinguished with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1969 and with the Legion of Honor (French decoration) in 1973, being both the highest distinctions that a civilian can to receive.
