Marie Skłodowska Curie (Warsaw, November 7, 1867 – Passy, Sallanches, July 4, 1934) was a Polish-born scientist with French nationality who conducted pioneering research in the field of radioactivity. She was the first woman to be laureate2 with a Nobel Prize and the first person and only woman to win the award twice. The Curie family won a total of five Nobel Prizes. Marie Curie was the first woman to be admitted as a teacher at the University of Paris. In 1995, the scientist became the first woman to be buried by her own merits at the Pantheon in Paris.
Maria Salomea Skłodowska was born in Warsaw, in the then Kingdom of Poland, part of the Russian Empire. He studied at the Floating University in Warsaw, where he began his scientific training. In 1891, at the age of 24, he followed his older sister, Bronislawa, to study in Paris, where he earned his diplomas and developed his future scientific work. In 1903, Marie shared the Nobel Prize in Physics with her husband Pierre Curie and physicist Henri Becquerel. The scientist was also awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1911.Marie’s achievements include the theory of radioactivity (the term she coined herself), techniques for isolating radioactive isotopes, and the discovery of two elements, polonium and radio. Under her direction the first studies on the treatment of neoplasms with the use of radioactive isotopes were conducted. The scientist founded the Curie Institutes in Paris and Warsaw, which until now are major centers of medical research. During World War I, he founded the first military centers in the field of radioactivity.
Despite French citizenship, Marie Curie never left her Polish identity aside. He taught his two daughters to speak Polish and took them on trips to Poland. He named the first chemical element he discovered of polonium, in honor of his country of origin. Marie Curie died at age 66 in 1934 at a sanitarium in Sancellemoz, France, on account of a leukemia3 caused by exposure to radiation by carrying radio tests in her pockets during the research and throughout her service in the First War, when mounting mobile X-ray units.
