Mahalia Jackson (October 26, 1911, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA – January 27, 1972, Chicago, Illinois) was one of the top gospel singers in the United States in the 20th century. p>
Mahalia began her career singing in Gospel choirs, a musical style that accompanied her throughout her career.
In 1937, at the age of 26, Mahalia recorded her first record under the label The Decca Coral. In order: “God’s Gonna Separate The Wheat From The Tares,” “My Lord,” “Keep Me Everyday,” and “God Shall Wipe All Tears Away.” The album was not a financial success and the Decca Coral did not renew. In 1947 (ten years later), she recorded with the Apollo label the song “Move On Up A Little Higher,” a hit so big that it sold 8 million copies, running out of all the stores. The song entered the Grammy Awards Hall of Fame in 1998.
Later, he recorded hits like “Let the Power of the Holy Ghost Fall on Me” (1949), “Silent Night, Holy Night”, which also had incredible success in Europe.
In 1950 she became the first Gospel singer to sing at Carnegie Hall in New York. In 1952, she began a tour of Europe and was critically acclaimed as “The Greatest Gospel Singer of All Time”. She was also the first Gospel singer to sing at the prestigious The Newport Jazz Festival (1958 and 1959).
He played a special role in the 1959 film directed by Douglas Sirk and played by Lana Turner and Sandra Dee.
In 1961, Mahalia sang in the possession of US President John Kennedy.
In 1963 she sang to 250,000 people, at the time where Martin Luther King Jr. made his famous “I Have a Dream” speech, a widely known civil rights speech in the United States. He also sang “Take My Hand, Precious Lord” at the funeral of Martin Luther King Jr.
His last album was Guide Me, The Thou Great Jehovah (1969). He ended his career in 1971 with a show in Germany and with final appearances on The Flip Wilson Show in the United States.
Mahalia has also been known for her efforts to help others by creating the Mahalia Jackson Scholarship Foundation for young people who would like to join the university. For his efforts he received The Silver Dove Award.
She died on January 27, 1972. She was buried at Providence Memorial Park , Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, United States.
In 1978, Mahalia Jackson was posthumously received at the GMA Gospel Music Hall of Fame.
