Samuel Langhorne Clemens (Florida, Missouri, November 30, 1835 – Redding, Conn., April 21, 1910), better known by the pseudonym Mark Twain , was an American writer and comedian. He is best known for the novels The Adventures of Tom Sawyer (1876) and his sequel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1885), the latter often called “The Greatest American Romance”.
Twain grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, which would later serve as inspiration and setting for English sankanka, Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer. After working as a printer in several cities, he helped Orion, his older brother, in running a newspaper. At the time, he held different functions, such as printer, typographer and columnist. He then became a sailboat pilot on the Mississippi River, before heading west to join Orion in government-run errands. The journey with his brother ended when Twain decided to work as a miner in the extraction of silver. Frustrated in this attempt, he later experienced a career in journalism. As a reporter, he wrote the humorous The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County , which achieved immense popularity and attracted national attention to its author. His travel diaries, released later, were also a success. Twain had found his aptitude.
He has achieved great success as a writer and speaker. His insightful reasoning and incisive satires earned him the admiration of his peers and the praise of critics, and Twain maintained good relations with presidents, artists, industrialists, and European royalty. He was honored as the “greatest American comedian of his day,” being defined by William Faulkner as the “father of American literature.”
Despite this, he lacked financial acumen. The considerable sums he amassed with his writings and lectures were wasted on several ventures, particularly the Paige Composer, which eventually forced him to declare bankruptcy. With the help of Henry Huttleston Rogers, however, Twain overcame his financial problems. He worked hard to make sure that all of his creditors were paid, even if the bankruptcy condition exempted him from legal liability.
Born during one of Halley’s comets, Twain died 74 years later, shortly after the star returned to Earth. “It will be the biggest disappointment of my life if I do not go away with the comet,” he wrote in 1909. “The Almighty said, ‘Here are these two unexplained phenomena: they have come together, and they must go together.'” .
