Eunice Kathleen Waymon better known as Nina Simone (Tryon, 21 February 1933 – Carry-le-Rouet, April 21, 2003) was a pianist, singer, songwriter and civil rights activist for black Americans. He is well known in jazz music, but has worked with many musical styles in life, such as classical music, blues, folk, R & B, gospel and pop.
The stage name was adopted at the age of 20, so that she could sing blues hidden from her parents who did not accept her choice of being a singer while training to become a classical pianist in bars in New York, Philadelphia and Atlantic City. “Nina” came from the Spanish girl and Simone was a tribute to the French actress of which she was a fan, Simone Signoret. It was the sixth of eight children, her mother being a Methodist minister and her father a carpenter. As a young woman she was barred from joining the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, despite attending a classical piano at the Juilliard School in New York. He also stood out for positioning himself against racism in the rising tide of the United States in the 1960s. Because of his involvement, he sang at the Martin Luther King funeral.After failing to be a major concert pianist through the conservatory, Nina spent some time in New York until she went to Atlantic City, and in that city, working as a pianist in a bar, she gave in to the owner’s requests to sing while she played piano. She adopted the name Nina Simone, who started a successful career, with hits like Feeling Good, Do not Let Me Be Misunderstood, Is not Got No – I Got Life , I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel To Be Free and Here Comes The Sun , as well as My Baby Just Cares For Me , which was used in a television advertisement for Chanel No. 5 perfume in 1986, which resulted in a re-release of the recording and Simone’s return to the music charts.
In his career, he performed songs of various styles, ranging from gospel to soul, and also composed some songs. She was one of the first black artists to join the renowned Juilliard School of Music in New York. His song Mississippi Goddamn became an activist anthem of the black cause. She talks about the murder of four black children in a Birmingham church in 1963. While performing at a military event in Fort Dix, New Jersey in 1971, during the Vietnam War, Nina Simone gave voice to those who opposed the conflict, when he sang a poem in which God is called a murderer, after 18 minutes of My Sweet Lord by George Harrison.
Nina has been twice in Brazil, where she recorded “Ready to sing (Ready to sing)” with Maria Bethânia in 1990. Her last show was in 1997 at the Metropolitan. The artist died in her home while she slept in the French city of Carry-le-Rouet in 2003 after battling breast cancer for many years.
