Wilhelm Richard Wagner (May 22, 1813 – February 13, 1883) was a conductor, composer, theater director and German essayist, first known for his operas (or “musical dramas,” as he later called them). Wagner’s compositions, particularly those of the late period, are notable for their complex textures, rich harmonies and orchestration, and the elaborate use of Leitmotiv: musical themes associated with individual characters, places, ideas, or other elements. Because he did not like most other composer operas, Wagner simultaneously wrote the music and libretto for all his works.

Initially he established his reputation as a composer of works such as Der fliegende Holländer and Tannhäuser, thus transforming the romantic traditions of Carl Maria von Weber and Giacomo Meyerbeer into an operatic thought of his concept of Gesamtkunstwerk . This allowed for the synthesis of all poetic, visual, musical and dramatic arts, and a series of essays were announced between 1849 and 1852. Wagner perceived this concept more fully in the first part of the monumental four-part cycle of the opera Der Ring des Nibelungen. However, his thoughts on the importance of music and drama changed again and he reintroduced some traditional forms of opera in his last stage of works, including Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg.

Wagner pioneered advances in musical language, such as extreme chromatism and the rapid shift of tonal centers, which greatly influenced the development of European classical music. His opera Tristan und Isolde is sometimes described as a landmark of early modern music. Wagner’s influence goes beyond music, is also felt in philosophy, literature, visual arts and theater. He had his own opera house, the Bayreuth Festspielhaus. It was in this house that Ring and Parsifal had their world premieres and where their most important works continue to be produced until today, at an annual festival run by their descendants. His extensive work on music, drama and politics has attracted extensive commentary in recent decades, especially where anti-Semitic content exists.

Wagner conquered all of this, despite living through his last decades in political exile, turbulent love, poverty, and flight from his creditors. The impact of his ideas can be felt in many arts throughout the twentieth century.
